Nimelle Heart

How a lithophane keyring reveals a photo

A lithophane recreates a photograph through differences in thickness. Light passes more easily through the thinner areas and less easily through the thicker areas, forming the light and dark parts of the image.

The Nimelle Heart has no built-in light or battery. Hold it between you and an external light source, such as a window or lamp, to see the photograph. Its appearance changes with the light behind it.

Choosing a photo for a heart shape

Start with a clear original photo and an easily recognizable subject. An evenly lit face, a pet portrait, or two people close together gives you a clear focal point. Room around that subject helps the image fit the heart without losing important detail at the edges.

A heart narrows toward the bottom and has a dip at the top. Keep faces and other important details away from those edges. A wide group photo or a tightly cropped image can be harder to fit than a simple portrait. Our lithophane photo guide explains what to look for before choosing a picture.

Heart keyring or illuminated photo light?

Nimelle is a keepsake to carry, with an image revealed by an external light source. The Orelume Light is a portrait plate paired with a powered stand for displaying a photograph at home. The choice is between a heart-shaped keyring and a photo light with its own illumination.
